If you still aren't being cautious about which apps you choose to download on your Android phone or tablet, perhaps this latest report will convince you to start taking the warnings seriously. This month, Symantec discovered a new type of Android malware called Sockbot which poses as legitimate apps on Google Play and then adds the devices of users who downloaded the app to a botnet, allowing attackers to create fake ad traffic.
Symantic claims that at least eight Sockbot apps have been identified, each of which has been downloaded between 600,000 and 2.6 million times. The stated purpose...

8 monthes ago   |   By Phone Scoop

Google today outlined a number of improvements it has made to the Play Store in order to help both consumers and developers make the most of Android apps and games. The most significant user-facing change is the addition of a "Try It Now" button that accompanies Instant Apps in the Play Store. This allows people to jump right into the app for sampling purposes without downloading or installing the full application. The idea is to give people a taste of what the app or game delivers without requiring them to download or pay for it right away. Google believes this will boost download numbers...

Google matches Apple by reducing Play Store fee for Android app subscriptions

8 monthes ago   |   By The Verge

Google today announced that it will follow Apple's lead in lowering the amount of money app developers must pay for mobile subscriptions processed through the Play Store. Back in June 2016, Apple introduced a new policy for its App Store to encourage developers to sell subscriptions as in-app purchases within iOS. That involved reducing the standard App Store transaction fee from 30 percent to 15 percent. It took effect in September of last year.
Now, Google is doing the same. Similar to Apple's approach, an Android developer selling a subscription service will be eligible for the cut so...

Google adds ‘try now' button on Play Store listings to highlight Android Instant Apps

8 monthes ago   |   By The Verge

Google is adding a new “try now” button to Android apps in the Play Store that support the company's Android Instant Apps feature. Instant Apps, first announced last year and opened to all developers back in May, let users immediately try out an app without having to download it. This is generally achieved by relying on deep linking between different areas of the app, similar to how one would navigate to specific parts of a website. The goal is to give users a quick, purposeful experience that falls somewhere between a full-fledged app and the clunkiness of the mobile web.
With “try now”...
