Are Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp down for you right now? Us too! And lots and lots of other people too, it seems.
We're getting reports of outages left and right across the three Facebook properties, with no indication so far as to the cause. It's all down so hard that Facebook's status page won't even load to explain what's up. Some of the respective apps appear to load, but are just loading cached data; refresh or try to pull in a new page, and things probably won't load correctly.

What you need to know
Late thursday afternoon, users of WhatsApp and Facebook announced the services being down.
There seems to be no indication as to what is causing the issue.
Pokemon Go and Oculus also seem to be suffering from the problem.
In what seems to be a weekly trend, various Facebook services are seeing outages across the country. We first recognized that the Facebook Messenger web client wasn't working properly, before noticing the same error message from the main Facebook website.

Facebook and Instagram were down on Thursday afternoon. The outage appeared to start around 5:30PM ET, with several thousand people reporting outages on DownDetector. The outage is the second one in less than a month from the social media giant; an outage on March 19th took its sites offline for several hours. Both Facebook and Instagram are down as of 5:46pm ET.
The outage seems to have started appearing at roughly 5:30pm ET, and while I've been able to access Facebook once via the web since then, the social network quickly went down again. Both Facebook's mobile apps, desktop and web platform seem to be down.
Platform outage tracking service DownDetector indicates a significant spike in Facebook and Instagram outage reports starting at roughly 5pm. Some reports also indicate that WhatsApp, Facebook's messaging service, is also down.

There's no telling how long it will persist.
