After seemingly running out of space for ads in its newsfeed, social-media giant Facebook is now in the process of trialling autoplaying video ads in its popular messaging platform, Facebook Messenger. Alongside chats in your inbox from your friends, family members, and people-you-met-that-one-time, you'll now be watching video commercials - a form of advertising that nets Facebook much more money than regular static ads. UPDATE: We've been approached by Facebook's reps who said they are rolling out the video ads very gradually to a very small percentage of people. We also have an official statement concerning this change:

Each year Facebook is becoming more aggressive when it comes to monetization of its services, so today's announcement that Messenger will display autoplay video ads inside people's chat windows doesn't really come as a surprise.
In a statement for Recode, Stefan Lukakos, Facebook's ad business guru believes that people will get used to these video ads playing in their conversation windows next to their private messages. Facebook seemingly took a look at its Messenger and decided it didn't contain enough stuff already. Hence, the company is adding autoplay video ads to the chat app. The rollout has started already, but as usual it may be a while before you see them.
Facebook Messenger started showing static ads last year, and now it's upping the ante. The app has been accused of bloat many times, and this will certainly not help alleviate people's fears about it turning into something that's not very streamlined.
